Personal Water Craft Beach (map)
This will be a leisurely morning paddle.
Our destination is Black Island. The route takes us up along Saddle Island and then across the ever-narrowing channel to Black Island (which isn't really much of an island anymore). Tim created a nifty little map of this trip for a previous event which you can check out here: http://files.meetup.c... Please note, however, that this event will be leaving from the PWC beach not Boulder Beach as indicated on Tim's map.
Round trip is about 8 3/4 miles. Beginners are more than welcome to turn around early - as long as you have designated someone to go back early with you. No one should paddle alone.
There will definitely be swimming once we reach our destination and probably along the way as well. Depending on how energetic I feel I might even practice some self-rescue skills once we get to Black Island. Feel free to join in. It's always a good idea to practice these skills in nice warm water and with a beach nearby.
We'll be off the water around noon (or maybe one if we go really slow) - just in time for some Tony's pizza and an afternoon nap!
If you don't own a boat just give Helen with Desert River a call. 888-kayak-33 or [masked]. Please reserve your boat asap - she'll need at least four people to rent boats before she can deliver.
What to bring:
$1 meetup fee
twice as much water as you think you'll need (at least one gallon)
hat
gobs of sunscreen
bathing suit
snacks
sense of adventure and a good attitude
pizza money
We won't wait for you unless you let me know you are running late. Call or text me no later than 7:45 a.m. at [masked]. Otherwise, you'll just have to catch up!
Directions to Personal Watercraft Beach can be found here.
Emily, this sounds very much like a slow poke paddle to me... but ... 8 a.m? You're killing me!
That's what naps are for. Besides, chance of rain, hail, windstorms is much lower in the morning - not that your afternoon paddles aren't exciting! ;-)
Anybody want to carpool? I'll be coming from the West side and can do a pickup at a central location.
So what's the deal with rudders? Helen said she'd bring me a kayak with a rudder. Do we really need these? I did fine with my basic little red sit-inside boat last time. Comments?
Susan, rudders are great if it gets super windy. Otherwise, you don't really need them. Even if your boat has a rudder it's not like you are required to use it - just leave it on top of the boat and don't drop in in the water.
Thanks, Emily... another question... will there be anyone on this trip who might be willing to teach us how to do a self-rescue?
Susan, depending on time and my motivation level I might practice some self rescue. Feel free watch and/or join in.
I'm up for carpooling from Anasazi / Lake Mead / Summerlin Parkway area.
For those interested in practicing some self-rescue check out the resources posted here: http://www.meetup.com/lasvegaskayakers/messages/boards/th...![]()

I live near you, Emily... I'm in Peccole Ranch (Charleston/Hualapai) so if I can catch a ride with ya that would be great! I'll send you my phone number.
"aaaaauuuggghhh I can't find me boat" yelled the kayak pirate ;(
I have all the other gear, somehow the boat must have been taken to storage. I know where I will be tomorrow.... Have fun and I look forward to meeting all of you. Anyone who wants to paddle with a duckie let me know!
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
Hi Karen! Keep an eye on the weather - if winds stay under 10mph this will be a great beginner paddle. So far the forecast looks great. Plus, we'll be staying fairly close to shore if we go to Black island so you could wait on the beach for us if you get tired. Hope you can make it!
